Selecting your builder should be based on several criteria. The builder's honesty, integrity and skills to maximize your budget are vitally important. Review their resume and portfolio of projects, speak directly with recent and current clients to evaluate their experience, and visit some of the custom homes directly with the builder.

As you interview builders, consider compatibility. Their willingness to listen, communicate and take action on your behalf will have a vital impact on your homebuilding experience. Discuss contractual arrangement options, payment processes, and standard scheduling procedures.

Follow-up after your project is complete is very important. Make sure your builder has a track record of being available, specifically after completion, to help with miscellaneous issues that show up after 'punch-list' completion.
